I have been sailing the seven seas for most of my life. I married a girl from New Zealand who I met while she was teaching in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. Together we roamed the oceans adventure in every port, romance in every anchorage. Eventually we had a kid. It could have ruined our lives but instead it added to them. Whether it was swimming with whales or petting wild dolphins, whether beach combing after breakfast or diving amidst so many fish the world disappears after lunch and a nap, either way we fall into each others arms after dinner under thousands of stars.
Yes, there are storms, yes there are pirates, yes bad things can happen. Storms we keep away from, they have their seasons. Pirates have their sea lanes, we travel others. Yes it is true, bad things can happen. Some times we return to the world, to civilization and are amazed. Bad things are happening every day! How can people live like this? Don't they go crazy?
Well, yes they do. That is another bad thing.
You don't have to put up with it. There is a better way. There are thousands of us, sailing around the world, living in peace and joy. And the parties we have on the beaches of abandoned atolls when we meet up! They are times of legend!
Why don't you come with us? Yes, there is a steep learning curve. Yes, you have to learn. Your survival depends of it. Get a little dinghy and start practicing. It's fun! Bring a picnic! The ants can't eat up your food! Land your dinghy on a beach and take a long lonely walk with you loved one. You get to live with each other all day and all night.
Yes, you have to work sometimes, it is true. But think of it this way. You are paying no rent, your electric power is coming from solar panels and wind generators, the rain gives you all the water you want, and if you need extra, use you reverse osmosis water maker. You have no bills! No one is charging you money! You are living a fabulous life for free! After a while you get tired of beans, rice and fish. Time to stop in a port and stock up at the grocery stores. For that you need money, you need a job.
Working is fun when you don't have to do it every day. Working is fun when two months a year will allow you to go hog wild in every grocery store you come to. Working is fun when you only have to do it now and then.
What more is there to say? Read this book. Read it again, or better, read it to your loved ones. I hate to tell you live does have its challenges. This is a unique book I stumbled across by simple good fortune. The story of Falcon, the son of sailors Mike and Karen Riley, is certainly interesting to say the least, but the entirety of the book is filled with even more. This couple's adventure on the high seas was often harrowing as well as romantic and adventurous. Written in an easy comfortable style it has such a natural feel to it. Mike Riley's ability to place the reader into the sailboat with his family is a joy. To join them in Karen's pregnancy, Falcon's birth, and his early childhood as he became a seasoned sailor by the age of five was amazing. If the troubled children of today's modern pop-society had an opportunity to have this kind of early life experience the world would be a better place. Buy this book and enjoy it!Product details

An entertaining, hilarious,(sometimes scary!) and heartwarming story of life at sea and parenting. Falcon is a lucky young man to have had such a childhood. I love Mike's style of writing and can't wait to read more!
Having lived the vast majority of my life smack in the middle of the USA, the very idea of being out of sight of land, on water, scares me witless. Having read another of Mike's books (and for the life of me I can't remember which one), reading Educating a Falcon was the book that finally won me over to the idea of at least giving the idea of living on a boat head space. After reading many other nautical type authors, I have finally reached the conclusion that I'm not getting any younger and it sounds like fun. Terrifying, but fun. And I credit Mike with starting the whole thought process. His son, Falcon, made a comment to me on Facebook that summed up the whole thing..."Close your eyes anywhere you are and you don't see land."
The book is enlightening, entertaining and educational. If you've ever thought of sailing, read it. I'm way beyond the having kids age, but were I younger, I truly believe I would have joined Mike and Karen out on the water, raising my own kid and enjoying life to the limit!
Having spent almost a decade on a small sailboat with my wife Stephanie, raising three kids, I can attest to the fact that Mike Riley writes honestly of he and his wife Karen's experiences raising a son aboard a sailboat. That while circumnavigating the globe a couple of times! His writing easily brings along with it the adventures of sailing to be enjoyed by both landluber and experienced sailor. Mike writes in a comfortable humorous style that has the reader engrossed in the boating lifestyle and easily moves from humor to serious adventure. He is knowlegable and witty and writes with no pretensions. Even with all the seriosness of such an adventure his spontaneous writing will keep you chuckling and wanting to hear more. Art Myers
